Description

Idli are soft and fluffy steamed rice cakes, a popular dish from South India.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of rice
  • 1 cup of urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Instructions

  1. Soak the rice and urad dal with fenugreek seeds in water for at least 6 hours.
  2. Drain the soaked ingredients and grind them separately to a smooth batter, adding water as needed.
  3. Combine both batters in a large bowl and add salt.
  4. Cover and let the batter ferment overnight in a warm place.
  5. Once fermented, grease the idli molds and pour the batter into each mold.
  6. Steam the molds for about 10-15 minutes until the idlis are cooked.
  7. Remove from the molds and serve hot with chutney or sambar.

Notes

  • Ensure the batter is not too thick or too runny for best results.
  • Fermentation time may vary based on the climate.
  • Idlis can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days.
