Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt butter and oil over medium heat.
  2. Add onions, salt, and sugar. Cook until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
  3. Stir in broth, wine, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. Toast baguette slices until golden.
  5. Serve soup in bowls, top with baguette and cheese.
  6. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly.
