Description
Whip up a sweet, safe hummingbird nectar in minutes. Simple ingredients, quick prep, and a tasty treat for tiny wings!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup of white granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water (filtered or tap)
- Optional: a pinch of lemon juice (to prevent mold)
Instructions
- Boil the water. Place the cup of water in a small saucepan and bring it to a rolling boil. This step helps dissolve the sugar evenly and sterilizes the mixture.
- Add sugar. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the cup of sugar until it’s completely dissolved. You’ll see a clear, syrupy liquid.
- Cool the mixture. Let the nectar cool to room temperature. If you’re in a hurry, you can add a pinch of lemon juice to help it cool faster and reduce mold risk.
- Fill the feeder. Once cooled, pour the nectar into your hummingbird feeder, filling it to the recommended level (usually about ¾ full). Make sure the feeder is clean before each refill.
- Replace the cap. Secure the feeder’s cap or lid to keep the nectar fresh and prevent contamination.
- Enjoy the show. Watch as the hummingbirds swoop in, sipping the sweet nectar and adding a splash of color to your garden.
Notes
- Use only white sugar—black or brown sugar can alter the flavor and attract mold.
- Change the nectar every 3–5 days, especially in hot weather, to keep it fresh.
- Clean the feeder with hot, soapy water after each refill to prevent bacterial growth.
- Store any leftover nectar in a sealed container in the refrigerator and use within a week.
